Journey into Sin

The purpose of "THE JOURNEY INTO SIN” project is the collaborative development and delivery of an Independent Theatre Production to be performed at the Newtown Theatre over four weeks from August 21st to September 15th.

For the producers, Nick Bolton and Stephen Carnell, the journey began in November 2006 when a writing workshop was run, featuring a presentation by Louis Nowra. The purpose was to form a core writing team and start thinking about a theatre production in 2007.

In early 2007, Nick and Stephen advertised for writers to create original 30-minute plays incorporating as their primary theme one, some or all the “Seven Deadly Sins” (Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth).

29 were submitted of which 9 were shortlisted and read at a Workshop on May 12th. Over 40 people attended this workshop, offering the actors a chance to read the plays outloud, providing welcome insight for the Writers, and giving the actors a chance to shine in front of the Directors. Everyone in atendance had to fill out an assessment sheet for all 9 plays.

Rigorous debate ensued as to which the final 4 would be selected and after all the results were tallied, and Directors were consulted, the final four were announced:

The plays:
Glutton for Punishment by Scott McAteer.
Directed by Alex Byron. Cast: Georgii Speakmann, Helen Sutermeister, Stef Dawson, and Maurizio Degliesposti

Just Another Tuesday Night by Natalie Lopes.

Mobile phone film for Sydney film Festival
Here's new of our latest project for the Sydney Film Festival Mobile Phone competition.

Written by Jackie and Gerry Greenland
Filmed and Directed by Nick Bolton
Edited by Shawn Harsh
Starring:
Christine Greenough as Summer
Jonathon Elsom as Dylan

The film was originally rejected by the lawyers for depicting drug use but after subtley pointing out that many films within the festival contained far worse depiction of drugs, they relented and we got it, albeit a tad too late to chase votes to win it.

It was a really interesting process - original brainstorming and reading of about 6 scripts at AA, followed by script development over a week or so. It was shot on location at Jackie and Gerrys house in Mosman, in just under two hours.

The constraints of keeping the film under a minute and no room for panning or zooming proved a challenge, but the immediate playback facility on a phone was great for review.

A key objective of this exercise was to treat it as a film eg a narrative, structure, story with some excellent acting, and keep the credits in, as a film normally would. Many of the entries on the site are simply video diaries or experimental video. Very few are actually a film.

And for writer and retiree Jackie Greenland, the disappointment of being originally banned from a globally renowned film festival, I think she was secretly chuffed to be considered so edgy!
